"Rally for Horses" a Great Success!

On Sept. 5, 2006, hundreds of horse lovers and activists for the humane treatment of animals gathered in Washington, D.C. on the steps of the Cannon House Office Building to show their support for H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This "Rally for Horses" was sponsored by the Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Speakers included:

  • Tracy Silverman, AWI general counsel
  • Connie Whitfield, wife of bill sponsor Representative Ed Whitfield (R-KY)
  • Sky and Dale Dutcher, whose horse Cimmorron was stolen and slaughtered
  • Eddie Kilroy, host of the XM 13 satellite radio show "Willie's Place"
  • Nellie McKay, singer and animal advocate
  • Amy Nelson, Paula Nelson and Raelyn Nelson Sweeney, daughters and granddaughter of Willie Nelson, sang "Wild Horses" with fellow musician Johnny Irion of "Sarah Lee and Johnny".
